4. Reliability: Maxell tapes have a reputation for reliability, with a low rate of hissing, distortion, or other audio issues.

Cons:

1. Expense: Compared to digital formats, analog tapes like the Maxell UD50-60 box reels can be quite expensive, especially when considering the cost of a compatible tape deck.

2. Limited Capacity: Each tape has a limited playtime, which may not be suitable for extended classical music pieces.

3. Potential for Degradation: Over time, tapes can degrade due to factors like humidity, temperature, and improper storage, potentially damaging the recorded music.

4. Playback Equipment: To enjoy the recorded music, you'll need a compatible tape deck, which may not be as readily available as digital playback devices.

Conclusion:

While the Maxell Classical Music Reel UD50-60 box tapes offer high-quality sound and durability, they come with significant costs and limitations compared to digital formats. If you're an audiophile who values the authentic, warm sound of analog tapes and is willing to invest in the necessary equipment, these tapes could be a good choice. However, if you're looking for a more cost-effective, convenient, and long-lasting option, digital formats might be more suitable.

Recommendation:

If you're set on the analog experience and have the means to invest in the required equipment, the Maxell Classical Music Reel UD50-60 box tapes could be a worthwhile purchase. However, if you're looking for a more practical and cost-effective solution, consider digital formats instead.

Details:

Anyone familiar with maxell tape knows that it has a certain smell to it, and these ones do. We did see some notes on the Boxes indicating 15 UPS recording. From the Box we opened, all cardboard cartons are from very good to mint condition, I would classify most of them as excellent.

Some tape brands include scotch 150, 250, Agra, Bass, maxell Ln, ud, Dix and Dix 1, 3m scotch 206, 207, etc. No surprises in any of the other Boxes, just more of the same. Dates of the recordings have ranged so far from 1975 to with a bunch of the index cards etc included with the tapes being in German, either the owner had a bunch of tapes shipped from overseas, or perhaps he spent some time in Europe.

The other Boxes contain 1 Box of indexes for the tapes, a number of Boxes of 7 reels, as well as assorted tape hubs, a metal plate to play the pancakes on, and splicing tape, etc, etc. The recordings range from the 1930s to the 1980, the 1930s tapes having been made from records, but there are also a number of radio station master copies that were sent to radio stations for airplay.

These tape brands and model's are indicative of this collection being accumulated over the course of about 30 or so years. Recordings range from full track mono to 1/2 and 1/4 track stereo. While many of the tapes come with metal reels, there are also a bunch of pancakes in the Boxes.

Each Box contains between some reels are full, while some have less than a full 7 reel, but more than a 5 one of tape on them. Details specific to this Box 3 maxell ud35 reels of tape.

The vast majority of the tapes are stored in a played condition, there's maybe 1/2 that appear to have been stored in ff or Re mode, but it could also be the tape that does not lie nice and evenly on the reel. Musically speaking, it's more of the same.

Up for sale are a bunch of tapes that came from an estate sale. For consistency, i'd guess. Note that the previous owner spliced white leader tape to the maxell tape, the tape itself is pure maxell though.

Mahler, Verdi, Strauss, etc.

All the tapes were stored in a climate controlled environment, and stored vertically. 5 or are packed with 7 reel to reel tapes with Boxes. He did this for of all of his reels.

For the classical music lover, these tapes are all exceptionally well cataloged, with multi reel tape lots packed together, and each Box is sorted by composer, I track. Some recordings span several tapes, some are complete on one tape. I suspect that these are going to sound fantastic.

All tapes appear to be stored in a played condition, tails out. Each Box is unique, and mostly cataloged by composer.

Amps included a rare pioneer, and a roughcast matched the b77, along with keg and m k speakers, etc. While there are a few UPS 4 track stereo reels, it appears that the vast majority are 15 UPS.

His reel to reel machines included an apex 351, a rev ox b77, and a rev ox a7 along with a Sony Tc 756 and teach a 73 so this was no slouch as far as his equipment went.
