Cheaper designs that use a single motor suffer from speed variations as the take up reel fills and changes the load on the capstan motor. The design of the heads, especially the head gap, has been optimized for each function. Considered one of the finest consumer tube tape decks made in the USA the Viking 88 is a 3 head machine with separate erase, record and play heads. The capstan motor also drives the rewind function but the capstan speed is not important during rewind.
There is a separate motor to drive the capstan and the take up reel. It has a low distortion push pull bias oscillator which is important for low noise and distortion recording. It also has record bias adjustments on the rear. By running the tape this way it allowed the tape to rest naturally on the heads without the need for pressure pads.
The heads are configured for the 1/4 track stereo format. Shipping costs are around and, this unit is in mint condition. This helps maintain a constant speed as the take up reel fills. The signal chain is all 12ax7 tirades and delivers that vintage tape tube sound.
The use of a separate play and record head also allows you to actually play back at the same time as you record to monitor or verify that the recording is being made correctly. The machine can also be switched to play 1/2 track stereo format tapes and operates at and UPS. The record head is a b2q4r 500 micron gap head.
This is the common format used in consumer machines. This is not a parts machine. Viking ran the tape over the heads while most others ran the tape under the heads which required spring loaded pressure pads pushing the tape up against the heads thus increasing head wear.
The unit is in perfect condition and comes in its original shipping carton along with 7 reels, rubber reel clamps, and the original 32 page operation and service manual in perfect condition with not even a bend on a page. This is the classic Viking 88 tube stereo tape deck two motor system from the mid which, to my knowledge, was the only tape deck which used what most would consider an upside down tape path.
You can adjust the record bias to be optimum for each type of tape that you use. The play head is a b2q7f 50 micro gap head.
