You might be able to clean it up, but I have not attempted to remove the patina. I purchased two c cell batteries today and paired them with a 9 volt battery to tested the unit.
This vintage Aiwa reel to reel tape recorder is in working order. It played back one of the tapes I have included in the offer, and it successfully recorded and played back a short testing 1 I would consider the tape recorder to be in very good to excellent condition.
The foam on the back of the battery cover is dried and is perishing, but is an easy replacement with the proper material. All original parts are included microphone, ear plug, manual, box containing the mic and earphone, and packing foam and cardboard box.
