Details:

The rc 140 has become noticeably more rare over the past 4/5 years and shows up on only occasionally. My theory is that the plastic gets brittle after many years. As a part of that I saw that some former owner had replaced the original plastic strain relief with a fairly ineffective rubber grommet that didn't fit very well see photo.

These comments are your warning.

These remotes are 30 years old and so is the plastic strain relief. And it certainly may be the case, even with the strain relief missing, that the remote they re selling still works fine. The strain relief I repair these Teac remotes replacing switches, capacitors, buttons or whatever is required to get them working again.

A small impact, or a tug on the cable, can cause the strain relief to break. 2 because I now think I understand the story behind the missing strain reliefs, i've stocked up on them and i'm now replacing the strain relief on each remote control I sell regardless of its apparent condition. Both the record and the pause leds illuminate as appropriate.

Teac rc 140 remote control unit for Teac a 4300sx, a 63 a 2300sr, a 3300sr and probably other Teac auto reverse decks of similar vintage. That strain relief is there because it needs to be there.

Stated shipping cost is for lower 48 states. With the work and testing that i've performed on this remote i'm comfortable offering this item as fully tested and guaranteed to perform as designed. I've made a fuss in previous listings for Teac remotes over the strain relief that should be in place on these Teac remotes several model's to protect the wiring cable as it exits the aluminum case. That could be you.

See the strain relief below. I see that same engineering approach in this remote control and would expect that the new owner will get many years of trouble free use from it. If you watch the listings on these Teac and ta scam remote controls rc 120, rc 140, rc 70, rc 71, etc you won't need to look very hard to spot one or more with the strain relief either missing or damaged. And a couple of the tape transport buttons don't work.

This item will operate assorted Teac auto reverse tape decks. All of the buttons now operate smoothly and operate as designed. But with this item missing the aluminum case will eventually chafe through some insulation and cause the remote control to stop working, or worse, short something out and cook some components in either the remote, the tape deck, or both.

I spend a lot of time working on Teac reel to reel tape decks and have come to appreciate how well engineered and overbuilt they are in many ways. Or the unsupported cable will tug at solder connections inside the remote and pull something loose.

The cord is fully intact with no cuts, crack, etc.

Specifics of those issues are noted in the last photo of this listing. I've included in this listing photos of what a problematic strain relief looks like. Sure, everything so far, until suddenly, and with warning, everything isn OK. Or maybe decades.

That would explain the high percentage of remotes that are missing this part, and also explain the remotes that are missing just a portion of this part. I'll point out here that in the last week i've taken in three Teac remotes for repair and resale, all of which had an issue with the strain relief. Over time i've been puzzled by how many of these Teac remote controls are missing the strain relief that belongs where the cable exits the aluminum chassis. Up for sale is this Teac rc 140 remote control unit.

I've gone through this remote to clean it and to verify all operations. All of these remotes belonged to someone when the strain relief went missing. My theory might be right, or it might be wrong, and it doesn't really matter either way. After a portion of it breaks off and disappears, the rest of it is loose in the opening and will quickly fall out.

As I write this listing, I note that there are currently no other rc 140's listed on. This remote control is not the rc 120 and is not comparable with decks designed to use the rc 120. I'll bet I find something torn loose inside, a direct result of the missing strain relief. I've also seen remotes with only a portion of the strain relief missing see photo which has led me to begin to understand what going on.

Ignoring all of this is like ignoring the light on your caddish board warning you that you re just about out of fuel. I have an rc 120 on hand right now that is missing the strain relief. The fact remains that a very high percentage of these items fail, and that is what needs to be addressed regardless of the cause. This remote has a few scratches in it from normal use.

I replaced that grommet with the correct plastic strain relief and this remote should be good to go for another several years. You won't be.
