Pros:1. Multichannel recording and playback: The SP-824 offers four channels for recording and playback, providing a more versatile recording experience.
2. Channel tracking: The ability to record and play back multiple tracks simultaneously can be beneficial for complex projects or for recording multiple instruments at once.
3. Durable build quality: Crown equipment is known for its robust build quality and the SP-824 is no exception, with a heavy-duty reel-to-reel design that can withstand frequent use.
4. Analog warmth: The analog tape recording process imparts a unique, warm sound to recordings that cannot be replicated by digital means.
Cons:1. Limited capacity: Tape reels can only hold a finite amount of audio, limiting the recording and playback time compared to digital storage methods.
2. Higher cost: Analog reel-to-reel equipment can be more expensive to purchase, maintain, and replace parts for compared to digital alternatives.
3. Limited connectivity: The SP-824 may lack modern connectivity options, such as USB or Bluetooth, making it less versatile for modern recording setups.
4. Requires maintenance: Analog equipment, especially reel-to-reel tape recorders, requires regular maintenance to ensure proper operation and to prolong its lifespan.
In conclusion, the SP-824 Crown Reel Tape Recorder offers a unique and rewarding recording experience, with its multichannel capabilities, warm analog sound, and robust build quality. However, it is important to consider the limitations, such as limited capacity, higher cost, and limited connectivity, before making a purchase.

Alternatively, if you prioritize portability, convenience, and a lower cost, a digital audio recorder may be a better choice for you.
The machine itself is beautiful, and has very little use. The fast forward and reverse doesn't operate however motors all absolutely work. Tape reels and hub-adapters not included. I suspect its a simple fix with an outer relay change.
Crown SP-824 reel to tape recorder 4 channel half track special playback unit. It plays the tape well not hooked to an amplifier. This machine was ordered from Crown for playback only.
I tested it as best could. I know this because when you hit play, both motors operate. This machine is in very mint condition. It was used very infrequently years ago along with a Crown CZ-844 recorder.
I am selling as-is stated.
