The Intermark RM-770T Reel Tape Microphone and Cipher Recorder is a vintage audio equipment with a unique charm that appeals to many audio enthusiasts. Here are the pros and cons of buying this setup:
Pros:1. Authentic Vintage Sound: Reel-to-reel tape machines are known for their warm, rich, and analog sound that digital recorders often lack. The RM-770T offers a unique and distinct sound that can be desirable for certain music genres and recording styles.
2. Dual Tracking: The Cipher recorder allows for dual track recording, enabling you to record two separate tracks onto a single reel. This can be useful for overdubbing, layering vocals, or creating interesting effects.
3. Tape Microphone: The RM-770T comes with a built-in microphone, eliminating the need for external microphones in some recording situations. This can be convenient and save you additional equipment costs.
4. Hands-On Recording Experience: Using reel-to-reel equipment can provide a tactile experience that digital recording lacks. It can be a rewarding and enjoyable process for those who appreciate the craft of recording.
Cons:1. Maintenance and Cost: Reel-to-reel equipment requires regular maintenance to keep it in good working condition. This includes cleaning the tape heads, lubricating the capstan and pinch roller, and replacing worn parts. The costs of parts and maintenance can add up over time.
2. Limited Capacity: Compared to digital recorders, reel-to-reel tapes have limited recording time. A typical 10.5-inch reel can hold approximately 30 minutes of stereo recording.
3. Limited Portability: Reel-to-reel equipment is heavier and bulkier than digital recorders, making it less portable. This can be a disadvantage if you need to transport your recording setup frequently.
4. Potential Quality Variability: Due to the analog nature of reel-to-reel recording, there can be variations in sound quality between different tapes and even within the same tape. This can make it challenging to achieve consistent results.
In conclusion, the Intermark RM-770T Reel Tape Microphone and Cipher Recorder is a unique and interesting recording setup that offers a warm, vintage sound and dual track recording capabilities. However, it requires regular maintenance, has limited capacity, and can be less portable than digital recorders.
If you are a collector, audio enthusiast, or working on a specific project that requires the distinct sound of reel-to-reel recording, the RM-770T could be a worthwhile investment. However, if you prioritize portability, ease of use, and cost-effectiveness, a digital recorder may be a more suitable choice. It's essential to weigh these factors and determine which setup best meets your needs and preferences.
Even if I did I am not sure I would be able to test all functions properly. Because recorder is in unknown working condition I am having to sell it in as is condition, for parts or repair only.
Measures approximately 20 x 15 x 8 it has some case scratches and a dinged corner but as you can see in the pics it is in very nice well cared for condition. Attached speaker cords in great shape as are speakers. I do not have a reel to test it out with.
I do know it powers up. Comes with power cord attached, pinch rollers attached and two intermark microphones.
