There is crackling when the volume knob turned, and a hum from speaker that gets louder you move your hand over tape head. It sounds as if was recorded too far away from the microphone, possibly off of TV or radio.

I tested it and everything appears to work mechanically, but i'm not sure how record so that is. I played the tape and it appears to have a recording of live music that can be heard faintly, hear girls screaming but don't recognize songs.
